Minimalism: A Habit

January 11, 2016

As much as minimalism is trending in fashion, it is actually a form of habit. I am having a really great time on INTO MIND reading minimalism in practice for lifestyle & fashion. They have a few printables (they are free!) to guide you through your path of minimalism, so check them out!

Since 1.5 years back, I have been wanting to embrace minimalism more but I have no idea where to start, how to start. I have a problem with starts and actually following through because I get easily distracted along the way. Another huge problem with me is I hoard along the way & get confused and in the end, getting undesirable outcomes.

Minimalism can be adapted in goal-setting (read more here). I want to practice minimalism so I get less stressed out, feel better, become a neater person and ultimately, be a true minimalist. Change will need time.

// The Strategy

< 3 Main Goals >

01. Be more active (physically)

I can definitely do this while I am in Singapore. When I have to head back to Australia for my studies, I will try to work it out. On most days (about 5-6 days a week) I will walk - to school, to the mart and back home.

02. Do better in my core modules

It's difficult, but I want to put in more effort in the assignments handed out. It's definitely not enough effort and misunderstanding parts of the assignments last year - sub-par grades which I am not very proud of. I just want to improve it by a little. I want to do well in Medical Nutrition Therapy, challenging, but I think I can do it if I set my mind on it.

03. De-clutter & Shop less

I hoard stuff even when part of me is ready to let it go. All these amounts to the mess I have wherever I go. I aim to de-clutter every 1-2months: throwing out unnecessary items. I will also want to practice shopping less (I think I did less damage last year than any of the years before). I want to stop shopping for unnecessary items (fashion & beauty items). If I shop less, I will not need to de-clutter that often. This year, I will hoard less, buy less, and eventually the need to throw less is minimised.

Spiritually and psychologically, I need to cut out negative humans. They spread negative vibes and bring your mood down, and you start to plunge into negativity as well. These are toxic humans. You and I need to stay away from them.

These are the people you should really avoid making friends with and hanging out. I swear negative vibes frustrate you more. You get anxious for no apparent reason. You start to overthink & neglect mental health.

I want to hang out with more positive people, people who are inspirational and of course with people who will be there if I ever fall.

I will go on a social media detox soon. I will unsubscribe to some newsletters, so my email doesn't get flooded with all the promotional gimmicks. Subscribe only to stores and webpages I love. Limited to 15 subscriptions. I will also clear my friend list on facebook, following list on twitter and instagram.

I might update sometime later on how I'm keeping up with minimalism. I really want to adopt this new habit. As a chinese saying goes "Learning to be good takes 3 years, and learning the bad takes 3 days." (a very literal translation). I want to learn to give myself the time & the space to change for the better.

I wish all of you out there will be happy, positive and less stressed in 2016.
