Easy Dieting

June 19, 2014

I have always tweeted that I eat too much and also wish to shed some weight. I finally got the opportunity with a plan after I left my job at A*Star, I started to change my lifestyle for the better. Started preparing healthier meals for myself, and try very hard to motivate myself to at least do a few simple exercises a day. Exercises I do include: Sit Ups, Hulahoop (my Top 2), Lunges, Planking, Tricep Extenstion, Biceps Curl, Leg Lifts. If I feel alright, I go and have a swim with my older brother.

I left my job on 27 May, and today it's 19 June, 23 Days of change.

I think taking the first step out, no matter how small it is, will lead to something greater. That's what happened for me, I have lost a bit of weight. While I was still working, my weight fluctuates from 45-46kg. But now it's from 43-44kg. I was quite shocked as well. I did not starve, I ate my meals on time and nutritiously! As I was already in a healthy weight range and I had a healthy BMI, I'm not allowed to lose too much weight, else it could be bad for me. So I only planned to lose 2-3kg at most. Though it's little weight loss, but I start to feel better and I can see parts of myself becoming more proportional.

As nutrition student, I swear by my life I will not try those popular diets. Because I have learnt and believe in, what you lose fast and easy will find its way back faster and easier. Those diets actually would cause a bounceback in your weight. So don't try them. Moreover, I'm a person who CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT FOOD. Will just be sharing some photos of my "healthier meals" and show you that dieting is not about restricting, but instead it's all about choices.

At first, I was scared that I would get hungry, because smaller portion size could really make me feel hungry, so I had bigger portions of vegetables and meat. Amount of brown rice I eat is about 1/2 bowl.

For breakfast, I could have toasted wholemeal bread w/ butter (or just bread by its own) or cereals with HL milk. If I happen to see some fruits in the fridge, i just throw it in my cereal bowl.

When I ran out of meat sources, I had tofu so I know I still have protein intake. My vegetables and meat are lightly seasoned: minimal soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper.

Largest portion I ever ate, felt a little regretful because I had a hard time finishing it. Should have just used half a fillet which I did the following day. Sometimes when I'm too lazy to cook brown rice, I just grab 2 slices of wholemeal bread and pop them in the toaster.

If I'm craving for something more flavourful, I use my homemade kimchi while stirfrying meat/vegetable to give it a stronger flavour. With kimchi, I don't add any other seasoning in.

To make my toast a little less boring, I do add in a slice of cheese for extra Calcium and Protein and sometimes even sliced Shiitake Mushrooms. Oh & I need to have my Yakult! Ever since I had yakult on a regular basis, my bowel movements have improved A LOT.

Just some tips for those who wish to attempt weight loss:

01. Brown rice over White rice. If you can't handle this, then half the portion of rice you usually eat.
*if you find it difficult to keep cooking brown rice, cook enough for a few days worth, and keep it refrigerated until meal time*

02. Limit products containing white flour and sugar, and salt.

03. If you are lazy to cook brown rice, wholemeal bread or a block of taukwa (beancurd/tofu)are good alternatives.

04. Drink a lot of water

05. Have fruits as snacks in between meals.

06. Start w/ 2 sets of exercises (at least 2 variations).  eg. 2 x 20 Situps 2 x 10 Lunges
*do exercises that you are comfortable with and that you can execute*
