Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Inspiration Lecture

July 2, 2012

What comes to your mind when you hear " School of Medicine " ?

I guess a majority of you who did not know much had the same thoughts: LEARN ABOUT MEDICINE.

That's right, but not entirely right. I should say that the school of medicine offers healthcare degrees, get to experience various healthcare areas, eg. surgery, anaesthesia and more.

I'm so glad i went for the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Inspiration Lecture on last Saturday, 30 June held at Genexis Theatre of the Fusionpolis building. The theatre is so cute, in a dome shape, and the escalators that lead to the theatre or up the building are so futuristic kind-of feel, all covered up (like curved shield over your heads).

The talk mainly focused on Medicine, Surgery and Surgical Education Technology. I enjoyed the surgery part the most, i will tell you why later.

Was having a headache on what to wear to the lecture, and since it was held outside (other people are attending), it was require by my lecturer that no collar-less shirt allowed, I was thinking of wearing a plain white tee with my floral skirt at first. & that my white collared blouse that i recently bought is on my 'Reserved List' of clothing as i have an award ceremony to attend this coming wednesday. Eventually, i picked out a new piece of clothing, new = have not worn it out before. It was a Fake 2-piece Shirt/Blazer given to me, from Cynthia my cousin about a year ago.

So i paired that top with my navy blue rose printed skirt, navy blue shoes and khaki 4Skin duck bag.

I felt like i was overdressed. But overdressing is better than under-dressing. I saw some random guys who entered the theatre in round-collar T-shirts, baggy jeans and my jaw almost dropped. Plus, their tee looks like their PJ, neck-collar area looked so crumpled. Some Junior Colleges attended the same session as I (with other SP, School of Chemical & Life Sciences students) did, like Hwa Chong, Raffles the so claimed smart-asses. I was looking around.. and i realised 'elite' JCs girls majority of them have the same hairstyle: Fringe Up, Low/Middle Ponytails, unlike the minorities or the usual hairstyle in Poly: High Ponytail (like those of cheerleaders). But the JC Guys some look quite good.

Entrance was only by ticket. Not sure how much my school (CLS) paid for us. It's so cute, and if you noticed the bottom states 'SHOW TIME'. Yes it was indeed a show!

We were each given a canvas goodie bag. It's of good quality kind please! :) And i find the design is pretty decent just that i don't really like the bottom words "Join SG's Newest Medical School".

The Lecture/Talk was by Professor Roger Kneebone from Imperial College (Ranked 3rd Medicine University in the world). YES, please don't laugh at his last name though i did when i read my lecturer's email invitation. The westerers have very weird last names, there were 2 more guys with amusing last names of CAMPBELL and BURGER. But the Burger guy was cute :3

I hope the University people don't sue me for the following photos, cause i didn't know we can't take photos until one point, they say can't when i've taken about 5 - 10 photos :O The photos are just for reference, personal viewing okay! Please DO NOT share on other social media platforms.

First thing that caught my eye when i entered the theatre. I was told there was going to be a simulation of a surgery. Following photos contain gore, blood. So if you can't stand the sight of blood, i suggest you do a quick scroll down and not see the photos. Or maybe just close my blog. Cause its bloody till the end.

So the surgery scenario was that a cyclist was knocked down by a car:

You can't really see the "injuries", but basically are cuts and open wounds on his arms and face. Fractured bone in the Shin area and bruises on stomach probably caused by internal bleeding.

Operation Theatre! Surgeons trying to find out where in the stomach was bleeding.

That's the intestines! FAKE ones of course!

They had 3 volunteers from the audience to help with the simulated surgery.

Surgical Instruments with blood splatters. Its all 100% authentic instruments!

Students all feeling the intestines after the simulation :) I felt it too! They said the texture and all is almost the same as what we have in us. So cool right?! Like feeling my own intestines. Oh! & there's the liver and stomach in that 'hole' you see there! The liver is DAMN HARD.

Theu gave free bears at the various booth down the theatre! Just participate and will get, at first i only wanted 1 bear, so Me, JingJing and Eric both are my seniors (Course and Sec School/Poly Respectively) went to do some anatomy quiz, and we got it. Then we all went to try the CPR, i did the easiest job, or maybe one of the important one also la, hold the resuscitation bag. Just HOLD ONLY. But i need make sure minimal air escape via the mask. & at the end of it, they gave another bear! So i ended up with 2.

& I was wounded that morning...

All bandaged after a quite deep cut.

Gross right. Okay I've left it bandaged.

NO I WASN'T INJURED AT ALL. Gotcha if you thought it was real!

Wound on JingJing's arm with stiches!

Remember the car accident simulation surgery? This was the fractured bone. It's also Man-Made!!! Looks so real! I touched it. Did you thought it was real again?

Cut on the "patient's" arm. EEEwww blood.. again, its man-made! But hey, did it look familiar?

Yes it does, similar to mine! Just that mine was a mini one!

At the wound making booth. Tell you it's damn genious of the person to create all these wounds! The right side where you see the white oval stuffs, they are the molds for the cuts. Beside the Macbook, you see Mac Cosmectics, MAC-ception? and the rest are some of the SAFE Chemical and ingredients in making the wounds.

Pouring his special silicone A & B into the cup... & Somemore liquid silicone.

After that he added MAC Liquid Foundation & something called FLOCK. It's like 4 different color: Red, Yellow, Green Blue but does not color the silicon.

The person who does all this is Max Campbell, he is the director of HealthCuts. He said everything is safe, which also mean is edible, just that taste weird. His assistant at the booth was damn cute and handsome! Young Ang-moh guy named Mikey Burger... Awww cute name too. Maybe i should call mysef Miko Burger or something. (Just kidding~). He then used a credit card or some card to slide on the surface of the mold to create that seamless effect.

Okay Thats the story and truth behind my injury, sorry to those who I've lied to. Hehehe!

Lastly let me have a hao-lian moment, 30sec only. Finally hit my target of at least 100 in a bowling game :) 119 was my score on Friday's lesson and it's now my highest score in my life.
